The Basics of Fur Elise & Beethoven

Title: Für Elise (which is German for For Elise)

One of the most well known and loved pieces in the world.

  Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven around 1810 when he was 40 years old but the piece was not published until 1865 well after Beethoven's death in 1827. 

The version of "Für Elise" we hear today is an earlier version that was transcribed by Ludwig Nohl. There is a later version, with drastic changes to the accompaniment which was transcribed from a later manuscript by Barry Cooper.

Who the song is dedicated to remains a mystery. There are no distinct records, letters, or accounts from people at the time make mention of an "Elise" in the composer's life.

Ludwig Van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. He was born on December 17, 1770 and died March 26, 1827. He was born in Bonn, Germany as the son of a court musician. 

He was a student under Franz Joseph Haydn in Vienna, as well as under Mozart for some time. 

He remains as one of the most famous and influential of all composers.

His best known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets. He also composed other chamber music, choral works (including the celebrated Missa Solemnis), and songs.

His other famous works include the Moonlight Sonata and the Ninth Symphony.
